I’m having serious issues with this feature of OS 10.6 Server. I take a student in WGM and change his password to ‘changeme’ and click Advanced, check change at next login and click Save. Then every time that user logs in it says “You are unable to login as jdoe at this time” and shakes them back to the login screen where now ‘changeme’ won’t work or their new password. These are network accounts.

Background: OD Master and two OD replicas, AFP, all running 10.6.8.v1.1 w/ clients on 10.6.8 v1.1

    HAL – OD Master, DNS
Hive1 – OD Replica, Data Server, DNS
Hive2 – OD Replica, Data Server

Apple looked at my DNS and said it is fine. For example, when I run:

host hal.windsor.lan 10.1.x.x and host hive1.windsor.lan 10.1.x.x they all resolve fine.

I get all sorts of errors in the logs, but usually No such home directory exists is the one that jumps out at me. Yet they all have home directories.

I’ve tried choosing None for home, clicking save, then choosing the correct home share and click save again and nothing. Sometimes a restart helps, but usually not. This is a serious problem as these are all new accounts, and as you know K-12 students forget their passwords all the time so it is a great ‘feature’ to be able to change their password to changeme click Change at next login and let them deal with it.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like the account cannot access it’s home directory so authentication is suspended. Check your file shares, make sure all POSIX and ACLs are in place. Also make sure time/date is all in sync with server client for Kerberos.
