headless server upgrade

This contains a link to the Apple forum where I posted my solution (and numerous hurdles!) but it also links to a guide on this site which really helped get the server installed and running my key services again nice and fast.

The main thing for me was somehow preserving my OD database (inc. passwords) when going from 10.3.9 to 10.4 I was able to clean install 10.4 in the end. The key was backing up the server system drive with NetRestore and having an iMacG5 to test things on. My Xserve is headless.
