Today I restored a 2011 MacBook Air from Recovery with a newly-downloaded InstallESD; I also captured the fresh InstallESD on a flash drive.

I copied InstallESD.dmg with SIU and created a NetInstall set on my lab, and for shits ‘n gigs, wanted to see if it’d work on a test partition of my Sandy Bridge i7 MacBook Pro… so onto a test partition it went.

Build is 11B2118, and all works perfectly–FireWire’s detected, graphics work just fine… my SuperDrive can’t be tested unfortunately as there’s another HDD there.

I’m creating an InstaDMG source with a 10.7.1 Vanilla catalog (simply removing the 10.7.1 update) and will share my findings… but as of now, it seems 11B2118 is perhaps a universal build… (for now, of course).

This may be old news so I’d love to hear if anyone has any other findings.

    Thanks!

Machine-specific builds are just that: specific to those machines. You have absolutely no way of knowing what bits they are missing that are required to safely operate other machines. Let me repeat that: you have absolutely no way of knowing. I understand that you want a universal image, and it is worth complaining to Apple that these machines were not “brought into the fold” with 10.7.1. But they were not, so you have to deal with that, at least until 10.7.2 (crossing fingers).

And people saying “it worked for me” means absolutely nothing in this conversation. They are not doing the work to validate the thermal controls, they have no regression testing systems in place to know where things go wrong, and they have no access to the list of changes between the builds.

Thanks for the words of caution.

I learned shortly after posting that my concern is, as it seems, soon-to-be moot regardless.
