I have just recently rolled out new Mac file servers to different sites. I’ve never had good luck with Spotlight searches against a server, I thought this would be better in 10.6 than it was in 10.5.
Anyways, a normal AD user searching spotlight will get hits back just fine, however they look funny. By funny I mean metadata seems to be missing… it doesn’t show an icon preview, the permissions show unknown for all files, and the path is not shown. Also they are unable to see the “open enclosing folder” option.
If I connect with my AD account (I have admin privs to the servers) I can search just fine and everything looks normal.
I’ve tried turning off mdutil, erasing and re-building the index, and modifying the ACE for the Spotlight user to no avail. The last attempt I’m making (not sure if this works yet) is to chmod the .Spotlight-V100 folder to 755. I’m not crossing my fingers.
Has anyone else experienced this behavior and resolved it? I’d rather get spotlight working than just telling them to use easyfind.
Thank you,
Ken
