Hi all,

Brief background of my lab environment: I manage video editing suites and we’ve seen some problems recently (past 3-5 months) with respect to the previously listed programs.

Issue #1:
We use Flip4Mac HD and Final Cut Studio (includes Motion, Final Cut Pro, Compressor, etc.) in our suites. Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem now where Flip4Mac HD activation prevents regular users from opening Motion. I determined this was caused by Flip4Mac because running the uninstaller fixes the issue instantly (does not require a restart).

The reason why I’m positing it here in the InstaDMG forum versus contacting Flip4Mac (which I’ve done) is because a regular install via a ginormous FCP package and a F4M package works fine. It’s only when F4M HD is activated does the problem occur, and even then it’s only sporadic. We’ve tried to do a packaged activation (which doesn’t work because telestream is nuts about licensing) and even a manual post-installation activation to no success. At this time we’ve basically uninstalled Flip4Mac completely until such time that we can figure out how to get it working nicely with Motion. I can probably provide way more information on this issue but unless you’re running into it, it’s just fluff.

Issue #2:
I use a cfg file to manage Firefox preferences. However, we’ve noticed on some machines for some users, that when they open up Firefox, their entire session is in gibberish. Not just a website, but anything short of the menu bars. Even the “About Firefox” pop up window is written in gibberish. The way to fix this is for the user to just close and re-open Firefox. Unfortunately, that’s the kind of bandaid fix we’re trying to shy away from.

The reason I’m posting it on this forum is because I’m curious what the lot of you’se are doing for your managed preferences for machines. It seems like the cleanest way to do it – all your bookmarks are set as well as suppressing the ‘you’ve upgraded to the latest version of firefox!’ tab on first load.

Issue #3:
I’ve noticed on some machines that Office 2008 gives me an error regarding a corrupt database and telling me to repair it. At this time, we’re pre-setting the preferences purely via User Templates. I took a look at the preference manifest but it doesn’t have a lot of the selections we customize in it (unless i’m completely off on how to read it). For example, we would like the Format Bar to show up by default for all users and all programs, we don’t want the new user set up thing to show up, and we don’t want the update microsoft window to show up.

Are we just asking for too much?

Major thanks for anyone that read through this whole schpeal and my apologies for monopolizing the last couple minutes of your day!

#1 I’ve only use Flip4Mac WMV (The Free one) so I am not sure why Flip4Mac HD would be flakey upon activation. I assume it is a standard .pkg installer?

#2 Are you using the Firefox CCK? I have started doing all my Firefox settings using the CCK and as a result I just use the .dmg file from Mozilla’s website as is without any changes. (See http://tinyurl.com/firefoxcck) I think using the CCK is by far the best way of accomplishing a customized Firefox install.

#3 I’ve noticed a corrupt database error only once or twice. It happened when I opened all 4 products within the space of a second. I’ve never had it happen opening only one at a time. As far as setting preferences, I also use User Templates and I find that to be good enough for my application. I know you can set settings such as format bar and whatnot if you make the change then yank it from the user folder.

Ask away if you have any other Questions/problems.

Afternoon Nate! Thanks for your speedy reply as always 🙂

1) It is a standard installation package. However, the activation i think is machine specific maybe…which is probably why creating an activation package on my loadset machine via Composer doesn’t seem to affect the lab machines. I contacted Telestream regarding the fact that they’re basically expecting me to manually activate 125 machines and their response was more or less ‘sorry, you have to if you wanna use our software’. Needless to say, my response was a bit more agitated but ah..such is the life of a sysadmin…

2) I will definitely look into Firefox CCK! I’ve been doing the previous method which is a pain whenever a new version is released so this is huge – thanks!

3) I agree – the only time I’ve noticed the error is when I’m ‘testing’ the machine and opening up, for example, Excel, Word, and Powerpoint simultaneously. But I guess most users don’t really do that so I’m not too concerned…hopefully 2011 is a little more friendly when it comes to this level of customization. So #3 I’m going to ignore – no reason trying to fix something that’ll only get replaced with a new workflow come the next Office.

As a #4 (or maybe I should just stick this in it’s own thread), is there anyway to references to DVD Templates (DVD Studio Pro) or Sound Files (Logic Studio) on a server location? I hate the fact that my loadset is almost 90GBs because of these uncompressed audio clips that a majority of people don’t even use…pushing it off to a network share and using symbolic links to reference it would be more than ideal. I figured out that without all the unnecessary fluff, my loadset could shrink down to almost 40GBs which could be reloaded in 15 minutes versus the current 45 minutes.

My next target is to use a purely network user home directory…however, given the fact that most of our users store GBs of data at a time, we would need to either A) have really REALLY fast network storage or B) exclude anything over a certain file size from transferring with the user’s profile. I know I’ve seen that done before but without something to limit the size of files being uploaded to a centralized server, we would experience severe network congestion which would make video editing painful.

Thanks again for any advice you can give!

I was just thinking about #1 again. Is there anything in the postflight of the package that seems to do the activation? Perhaps it is possible to get the software installed on the image and then have a first boot script do the activation.

Also, if you just install the package manually, does it ask for a serial # or is it a serialized package? Is activation part of the install, or is it another step after the .pkg has been installed?

#4 I have a 93gb lab image myself with Final Cut Studio 3, Pro Tools LE and Avid on it. I really wish I could make the image smaller, but I figure for what they are doing it is just the price of admission. We just reimaged 26 machines in a lab and it took just shy of 5 hours for all 26 to complete (It was a 93gb OS X image and a 10gb Windows image, dual boot). I think for large images like that, it is almost best to manage them wisely and do maintenance on them as much as possible rather then reimage them with any amount of regularity. I personally use Munki to this end (And I love it! – http://code.google.com/p/munki/)

Let me know if you figure anything about in regards to stashing the shared content on a folder somewhere. I had not really thought about it much, but if you get it working well I might look into doing the same.

Ok – I have some progress on the 3 items.

1) The activation process is purely manual. It calls home, receives some kind of confirmation that the license is valid and in the right quantity, and then changes something on the local machine that activates it. The installation package installs just the application and does nothing with the activation. I tried to just use Composer to capture the activation process, but it doesn’t seem to work between different machines (most likely machine specific changes are made). So activation is manual and Telestream doesn’t seem to want to budge from that…

2) I just made a couple xpi’s using Mozilla CCK and it’s awesome! My only gripe is that I can’t seem to remove the default bookmarks such as “Most recent”, “Getting Started”, and “Latest Headlines”. But that aside, it does everything I need to do globally so I can finally upgrade freely without reservation.

4) The image size is definitely going to be the next big thing for us. I’ll play with some linking and see if we can get away from such a large ‘full’ image.

I’ll take a look at Munki and see if it’s something we can use – ideally, we would use Instadmg to create the initial image and then run something like Radmind to maintain it.

Thanks!

I think munki is a much cleaner way of doing stuff over Radmind. Radmind isn’t bad, but I think munki is slightly better.

That’s actually very encouraging. Do you use munki along with Workgroup Manager? Currently, I’m using WGM for just the bare minimums such as Software Update server, various gui featured customizations, machine names, and printer drivers.

I honestly wouldn’t mind a Netboot scenario except for the large user file sizes and the lack of persistent shadow caches.

I don’t use Munki with WGM, but I know the Head Dev does (Greg Neagle). I manage printers and print drivesr using munki as well as Flash, Flip4Mac, firefox, etc.

Here is a good list of what can be done: http://code.google.com/p/munki/w/list
