I have a client with a Mac department with a mix of 10.4-10.6. They are all bound to a 03 AD, and are connecting to shares on another 03 via SMB. Sometimes the directory browsing of the share is quick, and sometimes it takes 30-45 seconds for the files to appear. This is very speratic in that sometimes you can browse to a folder with 30K files and it is immediate, and sometimes it takes forever, but sometimes you can browse to a folder with 5 items and it does the same thing. WINS is enabled, and being obtained via DHCP. It doesn’t matter if the mac is joined to the AD or not, the browsing times are still speratic.

A little background info: The shares were originally on a 10.3 server and have recently been moved via a 10.6 iMac that connected to both the old and new shares. The client used ditto to move everything. I was originally thinking it might have had something to do with the ds store files, but i have removed all of them. The performace seemed to increase speratically, as before we did this, it was all bad. The client is contemplating turning on AFP on the 03 box. Any help is appreciated, and if anyone needs more info please let me know.

All your clients are having issues from 10.4 to 10.6 with slow browsing??

    If its just 10.6.x with SMB……look below……

Also with 10.6 you have issues with Streams if using SMB. Need to disable on 10.6 to have 10.5. and 10.4 clients see the same things. 10.5 streams can be enabled not sure about 10.4. I just disabled streams on 10.6 for now. See here.
