Anyone else tried a 10.4.11 Server upgrade to 10.6?
I’ve done successful and smooth upgrades from 10.5.8 to 10.6 but was yet to try a 10.4.11 to 10.6 upgrade until today.
Everything seemed to be going smoothly until during the Server Setup Assistant carrying out the migration stages. OD migrated ok and it moved onto the services upgrade. I figured this is when it converts the configuration from the services to the new 10.6 formats. This stage ran for a few minutes and then reported that it had failed and the server needed to restart.
It rebooted and looked ok at first. GUI was fast/responsive but then Server Admin couldn’t connect to the server itself. As though servermgrd wasn’t configured and running. I checked the SMB config files and determined they were pretty generic and totally missing the domain name. I didn’t have the time to troubleshoot and had to abandon ship. I would like to have investigated MigrationExtras or something to try and get back to whatever Server Setup Assistant had tried and failed to do.
Anyone have this experience before? Anyone already expert in manually running these migration processes? Could I have perhaps ran Migration Assistant???
I have an image of the Tiger Server so if my boss lets me I may research this further by recreating in the lab. Sadly this was a production server which had developed a serious problem. Previously one could run an upgrade to Leopard Server with the 10.5.4 DVD and it would recover Tiger servers which had gone tits-up.
Cheers.
