We have a need to move our existing ODM server from the current hardware and DNS name to an all new server with a different DNS name.

    We also have a plan:

Setup the new server as a replica to the current master. Then promote the replica to master and take down old master. Then point all our clients to the new masta.

The first two steps are not so hard, we have tried in test environment. But the last part seems to be the tricky part?

    What say you?

We have about 700 clients in the OD, this server is part of a Golden Triangle. We have FileWave on all clients so we have good control of the clients and another way back to the client. Oh, Server OS is 10.5.6 but is upgradable to 10.5.8 if that solves anything.

    Thank you for your input.

Yes we bind new clients with a script that authenticates against the AD and against the ODMaster inorder to bind the client.

    So yes, Authenticated binds!

    Thanks

What do you think of making a DNS forward in the network. So all existing client would still connect to old.server.com and all new clients would use new.server.com?

Would this create problems for the clients? Problems with reverse lookup perhaps?

    Thanks

Do you set binding by DHCP? You can promote your new server to ODM and then demote the old ODM to connected to a directory or replica and Authentication won’t change. By design the client will go out to the server it is bound to, then try the next available one on the directory.

There should be a whole kbase article actually describing how you can change your master server in a production environment.
