I’ve found a few people complaining about this on the web, including someone on this forum (https://www.afp548.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=18289), but no solution.

AFP is running on my system, and I can start and stop it just fine in Server Admin.app, but if I do a “serveradmin status afp” from the command line, I get an “afp:state = STOPPED”. If I try to stop afp from the command line, it acts like it does, but it doesn’t. If I try to start it, it says it’s already running, but still reports “STOPPED”.

Does anyone know where serveradmin references for it’s “state” files? I’ve killed servermgrd, then moved /var/servermgrd to another location and reloaded, to get it to recreate… there must be some state file somewhere that serveradmin refers to that says afp isn’t running, and that file isn’t being updated when the GUI starts it.

    Please advise…

I have no idea if this makes a difference, but did you try checking the state of AFP when you had a client connected? Sorry if this is something stupid to say.
