ParticipantHow can i host my web site and get my domain names working ? I’ve looked everywhere on the AFP site regarding my issue and also other sites on Google but I can’t seem to figure it out OR what the problem is. It seems minor but iim baffled!
SERVICES
My Web server (OS X Server 10.4.8) has these services running:– FTP
– Mail
– WebI have a number of domain names, but in particular can’t get the main one working, domainname.net.nz, let alone the others. The docs and PDF references from Apple are terrible to say the least!!
DNS INFO
– My Domain Names are being pointed by the DOMAIN REGISTRAR at my Static IP address
– I have the pinhole through my firewall working which goes to the OS X Web Server IP address, which i believe is working correctly.
– When i TRACEROUTE to http://www.domainname.net.nz from http://www.dnsstuff.com i get the IP Address of my router which is good.IN SERVER ADMIN
>> WEB Services > Settings Button > Sites Tab, I’ve configured the Domain Name as follows:Domain Name = domainname.net.nz
IP Address = Any
Port = 80Web Folder =
/Library/WebServer/Documents
Default index files = index.html
The Enable box is checkedMORE INFORMATION
– I don’t have any alias established under the domain name >> Aliasas Tab > W”eb Server aliases”, or under the next box down the “URL aliass and redirects”, although have tried http://www.domainname.net.nz in the “Web Server Aliases” box
– I haven’t enabled anything under REALMS as i didn’t believe this effected webhosting.
– there is just the one domain name in the SITES tab
– Does DNS need to be running as a service even though the A RECORD is pointing by my registrar at my STATIC IP address?PROBLEM:
When I go to the domain name, via http://www.domainname.net.nz or domainname.net.nz it doesn’t open, and produces a not found error – this is with or without www.QUESTION:
What am I doing wrong? What do I need to do to get this running?
Do i need another service started that should be?
I can’t seem to figure out what the issue is although i don’t think im doing anything wrong, and also haven’t got the DNS service running which i believe is CORRECT as im not hosting the DNS myself. HELP !Thanks so much for your help !!

ParticipantOddly, I’m in your exact situation.
I’ve also fired up and configured DNS services, have removed the star in Web setup, and everything is working fine from my side of the gateway (set up with the assistant). However no one from anywhere outside can get webpages. Pings work, and the DNS names resolve to the IP address of the server.
I need to doublecheck, but I’m reasonable sure that a filemaker database I was playing around with on that server was accessible via direct IP addressing. That was a couple of weeks ago.
This one has me a little perplexed.

ParticipantHi – thanks for your response.
Yes, I get served content on my local network for the following:
http://192.168.0.2/ [ the IP address of the OSX 10.4.8 Server ]
http://localhost/
http://zulu.local/ [ computer is called zulu ]But not from outside of my local network. Ive tested this by using a different internet connection, both don’t work ie domainame.net.nz or http://www.domainname.co.nz don’t work.
Also, from reading another post on AFP, (something to do with Kerberos) the results of:
scutil –get HostName
and
hostnameare:
HostName: not set
and
zulu.localDoes this mean anything ?
I had been using OS X 10.3 Server and the machine was working sweet and I even was able to point multiple domains and different content which i was pretty happy about – and my confirmation that the PINHOLE on port 80 and on port 21 was working as it should.
Is the hostname thing the answer im looking for?? If so what should this be? domainname.net.nz ? or zulu? (server name)
Thanks alot – !!

ParticipantYes under “Sites” ive set the domain name to be domainname.net.nz, and then under “Web Server alias” have put in http://www.domainname.net.nz
I’ve disabled “Performance Cache” for the site – the domain wasn’t resolving last night, but 14 hours later, ive checked from the alternative internet connection, and it works fine using either www or just the domain.
Is there any way, on the local network to get it so you can put in the domain name and it will resolve to the website as well?
Does anyone know if this can be done, if so how would i go about it ??just one other thing …. thanks for your patience and great help so far !!!

ParticipantFWIW,
I appeared to have solved my problem. The Gateway Assistant appears to not open up the needed ports in the firewall to allow DNS and web requests through. Or I somehow donked them up after the fact, although I hadn’t touched them.
In Server Admin I went to “Firewall”, then “Setting” and then the Services tab. Both DNS – Inbound queries and DNS – responses to outbound queries (Port 53) were unchecked. So I checked those. Also, and what first drew my attention, HTTP aka port 80 was also unchecked. I checked it. This was on the “Allow only traffic for “any” on these ports” option.
Then I had a friend last night, and the wifey this morning try both sites. They now both work!
Maybe this will help you.

ParticipantHave you checked Web|Sites|Settings to make sure there isn’t still an asterisk there?
Before I removed that I couldn’t resolve from my local network.

Here’s the complete thread, I couldn’t get things to resolve on the internal side of the gateway until I killed the asterisk described here…
