    Hi Everyone,
After recently installing an intell X-serve 10.4.8 and configuring the software update service, I began to manually setup updates using the defaults write command on my clients. 10.4 machines work beautifully but 10.3.9 machines (which are all my production boxes 30+) do not work at all. I have contacted Apple premium support and they had no idea.

Is there a way I can get my 10.3.9 machines to point to my local update server?

Typical. Didn’t you hear? They only support iPods these days.

Nope, I tried just about everything and talked to several fellow engineers about it. Consensus seems to be that it’s not possible in 10.3.9.

Well, i would have thought if a client machine can update from apples server with software updates it would of been as simple as pointing it to the local update server…. to me that makes perfect sense. If software update didnt work at all with 10.3 then i could understand.

Type this in terminal as the admin user on the client machines:

    defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://your.url.here:8088
