    Server: OSX Server 10.3.9
    Clients: 10.3.9, 10.4.4

A user attempted to duplicate (cmd+D) a file this morning on a shared volume (AFP share). His client machine is running 10.4.4. The file is a ~3GB Photoshop PSB file (3,169,010,324 bytes). He told me that the copy that was created was corrupt and woul dnot open in Photoshop and that the original got deleted after the duplication process.

I have since verified this behavior. From a 10.4.4 client, if I duplicate this file on the shared volume, the Finder cpy progress dialog comes up, but it stays at zero % the whole time. Meanwhile, the files is actually duplicating as I can see it growing by looking at the server via command line. At the end of the duplicate process, a dialog box stating that “the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code -50)”. The original then dissappears from the directory. The copy exists and is the same byte size as the orig, however, Photoshop will not open it.

I tried the same operation from a 10.3.9 client. After hitting cmd+D, no Finder copy dialog pops up. However, by looking at the server from the cmd line, I see the file is indeed duplicating. Once it’s fully duplicated, The same error message pops up stating that “the operation could not be completed…”. However, the orig stays in tact this time. The copy is still corrupt though.

If I copy the orig to the desktop, either 10.3.9 or 10.4.4, and duplicate it there, it works fine. Also, the orig file is fine and can be opened with no problems, either locally or from the mounted volume.

Any ideas why this is happening? Thnx

I contacted Apple support. The tech was able to reproduce this problem, so it looks like a bug. He’s escalating the issue. When I hear something back I’ll post it.
