I have a client who purchased an Xserve with 2- 400 Gb drives and an 80 Gb drive with a hardware RAID controller. He wants to mirror the 400Gb drives and use the 80Gb drive as a startup disk. The problem is that when he sets up the mirrored drives the 80Gb drive is not seen by the system.

Is there a command that would allow the hardware RAID to recognize the 80Gb drive but not use it as a hot swap?

Would he be better off putting in 3 400Gb drives, setting up RAID 5 and putting the OS on that big volume or on a logical drive? What kind of performance hit could he expect from this?

    Thanks for your help

I’ve installed two Xserve G5s for customers with the HW raid card and three 400gb drives running L5 and would recommend it. Good speed and reasonable redundancy.

Not sure what exactly the 80gb drive is for in current setup?

I have a similar situation… a XServe G5 with Apple’s hardware RAID card with 3 – 80GB drives. I would like to mirror(RAID 1) the first 2 and use the 3rd for RSyncX backups of the mirror. What am I missing in megaraid that will let me use that 3rd disk? I can create the mirror no problem but the only way I’ve found to get the 3rd drive to show up is to configure it as a stripe(RAID 0). This seemed to work fine until I popped the striped drive out to see what would happen. I then put the drive back in and the light on the front of the drive was yellow and stayed yellow. Megaraid -showconfig showed that the status was online. I couldn’t rebuild, initialize or changestate. The GUI still saw the disc but I couldn’t copy files or create new folders on it. I did have read/write permissions to it. I finally restarted the server. The green light on the drive came back but showconfig showed it was failed. The audio alert kicked in and annoyed the hell out of the other admins in my area. I quickly learned how to turn that off. After the restart I could changestate to online and that made the disc usable.

The short of it… how do you config that 3rd disc to be a usable?
