GuestDoes anyone else have the following problem or a solution to the following problem?
HP printers : LaserJet 2100, 2200, color 4600
Clients and server 10.4.1 all installed from scratch. server G5 DP 2.3, clents a range of aging g3s and g4s.
Using FileMaker, when printing to shared queues on server or directly from client to printer we are periodically getting printouts with nonsense text replacing some but not all of the text showing on the screen. At other times all printouts come out as expected. This never happened when all machines were running various versions of 10.3 and the only change we have made is from 10.3.9 to 10.4.1, no application or other software or hardware changes.
I figured that possibly there was a problem with Server to Client encryption in FileMaker…turned it off…no change in problem.
Neither FileMaker nor HP seem to have anything like this in their support areas from the searches I have done.
This is not the same as the ASCII selection issue which is pertinent to Photoshop. The key here is that not all of the text comes out garbled.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

GuestThanks for your consideration of this problem.
Currently the printers on the server are via IPP… Since I’ve been fighting this one since Tiger was installed I’m relatively confident that I have tried LPR also with no change in results. I went back to IPP since it seems to provide the most information to the users and is being promoted by Apple as most up to date…

ParticipantI have an HP2200dtn and haven’t had any Filemaker printing issues at all.
In my setup I gave the printer a static IP address and a corresponding DNS entry (with PTR) in 10.4.1 server. Connecting vis IPP. It has worked great since day one.

GuestThanks for the feedback. I’ve just been printing directly to the static IP address of the printer…so no DNS entry for the printer. I’ll give a shot at applying a name and DNS entry and see if that changes our problem.
This is just strange. I’ve done a fresh 10.4.1 install on client which exhibits most problems, exchanged the RAM, recreated the LDAP user in WGM with most printing problems…

GuestMay have resolved this one.
Dispite FontBook’s claim that they are valid… some of our older fonts (not included in current OSX system) are not running correctly 100% of the time. Selected newer fonts for the offending fields, so far no new printing problems.
It seems that if you see this type of printing problem, check your font file ages and use something more current if you can.
Will be back with more if something else surfaces.

GuestAnother possible source or solution for this problem:
Corrupt cache of fonts used. The font cache seems to work on a per user basis. They are also localized to the client machine not the server.
On the client go to Library>Caches>com.apple.ATS. Folders inside are listed by user ID #. Simply put the folder with the ID # for the user having the font trouble in the trash. Restart. Empty trash. Font problem went away.
This may be the actual problem. The earlier solutions I found only changed things in the short term.
