I’ve got a low-end PM G5 1.8GHz here that seems to do a lot of paging. At first, I thought it was because it only had 512MB, so I doubled that. It seemed better for a few days, but now it’s back to thrashing on almost every app-switch. I generally don’t shut it down.

I just checked uptime and top, and it’s had over 2,000,000 pageouts in five days. Is that normal? Was my old PM G4 1.25GHz doing the same thing, only more quietly?

    What to check?

    Steve.

Top’s showing about 480MB free. Shouldn’t be thrashing.

I downloaded and ran Memory Stick, just to take a look, and it immediately stopped thrashing. I can now switch among apps without serious disk-related lag. I quit Memory Stick and so far it’s still OK.

    Befuddled, bewildered and bemused.

    Steve.
