This is bizarre. We’ve had 10.3.5 Server acting as our lan dns server for some time, yet suddenly on mac clients all first attempts to hit a website fail with error “can’t find the server ‘xyz.com'”. The second attempt (hit reload) then always succeeds. If we change a client machine’s dns server to a different one, the problem vanishes.

All browsers on our mac clients now suffer from this problem. The win clients (also with dns set to the X server) do not suffer from this problem.

From a mac client’s terminal, dig requests never fail. No failure messages are seen in the bind log.

Can anyone suggest how to determine the cause of this problem?

    Thank you in advance

I just wanted to say that I’m having the same problem as well on two different DNS servers. You aren’t alone here.

The issue seems to have started around 10/26 when the root servers began handing out IPv6 responses to queries.

The only solution I have heard of so far is to update the BIND install on your DNS server to v9.3 and turn off the IPv6 option.

There is a thread on the Apple Discussion boards about this. Under Network Services.

Thanks for the Apple discussion thread tip – problem is totally solved now. The solution is to update to Bind version 9.3 (from the default installed version of 9.2.2) and then cause named to start with the -4 switch (forcing IPv4 mode).

No other bind config changes necessary. Happy day!
