    Hi,

I’m having problems trying to get a group share to automatically mount for clients. (Server = 10.3.2, clients = 10.3.2).

The group has a group folder (located on the server itself; on a second disk; so the path is /Volumes/GroupShares/thegroupshare). I’m trying to mount it as AFP.

What I don’t fully understand is what the ‘Create mount record’ checkbox means, and exactly what goes into the ‘Custom mount path’ (which is what I’m using – [right?]). I think the ‘custom mount path’ is what gets created on the client’s machine; not what already exists on the server? Is there a standard path for this, like somewhere in /Network or /automount?

I’ve tried combinations of settings but without success. The share does not appear in the client’s Finder window as a mounted volume (yes, all preferences are on to show network volumes).

Looking at the system.log on the client machine, I can see that it tries to create a symlink for the mount, but fails with error 5. Perhaps this is the root cause of the problem? Error 5 is ‘I/O error’ !?!?

All the docs I can find on Apple’s website are for Jaguar and don’t seem to have been updated for Panther. Are there any that describe this in detail?

Please let me know if you need more info.

    Thanks very much.

    Steve.

PS. What I think I need is a ‘Group shares for Dummies’ book 😥

I’m having a similar problem. I have asked this on other forums and so far have not received any replies. I am successfully mounting ‘Home’ directories for my users but none of the other share points seem to get mounted.

When you select the check box to create a mount point, it is supposed to automatically mount it as the selected share (there are 4 radio buttons but only user home directories work for me). If any of the other 3 are being mounted, I sure cannot find the path on the cleint.

P.S. Are you running DHCP and are the clients you are having trouble with obtaining DHCP info correctly?

I forgot to mention, we have a workaround if you are interested.

Thanks for replying (I thought nobody cared 😥 😆 )

I’ve also found that of the 4 options as to how to mount the share, only ‘as user home directories’ worked for me too.

BTW, DHCP is running, but no problems.

One of our workarounds is to use the Shared folder at the same level as users for … well, shared items! The only problem with that is permissions. The group share has the ‘inherit unix permissions’ switch turned on, and that seems to work well.

One other problem I have now is that I (think) I’ve now turned everything off to do with group shares, yet a dialog box asking me to connect to the server still comes up every time I log in. Perhaps something is still cached on the client?

A workaround would be nice. Will you post here or do you want an email?

    Thanks very much.
    Steve.

I can post it here. It will seem convoluted but it works. You must do this using the remote server tools as this does not work if you do it on the server itself.

First, connect to the desired server share(s) using Finder (command-K) on a client machine with the remote server tools installed. This sets up the correct path for remote connections. I suppose if you were a little more savvy with OS X then I, you could probably type it in manually but this is the easiest way for me to be sure it is right.

Next, fire up the Workgroup Manager and go to the groups tab. Highlight the desired group to automount the share(s) you connected to above. Then select “Preferences” in the ‘View” pull-down menu (or press shift-control-R). Click on the ‘Login’ icon and this should open the “Login Items” panel (make sure that is the tab highlighted). Then drag the connected share(s) from your desktop into the panel. With that share(s) highlighted, make sure you check the box to “Mount with User’s name and password.” Click the “Apply now” button and continue with other shares and groups as necessary. That should do it. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I had the home directory stuff working but it was the other mount points that were at issue. You are the first one I found to confirm that the code is broken, even Apple support has not said that to me.

The only other thing have a question about is why you think custom is not needed.
