Workgroup Manager and non-Apple LDAP directory

Has anyone used Workgroup Manager with a non-Apple LDAP directory? I want to be able to use an already-existing OpenLDAP directory to store the important information that Workgroup Manager is supposed to allow. (I haven't seen or used WM yet.) In particular, I want to make sure that existing LDAP user account entries map up to OS X users, and that policies (like password expiration/changing policies) can be enforced on OS X clients. Does WM let me do this without having an actual Apple server running Open Directory? And can WM be installed on a client/workstation machine, rather than just on Jaguar Server?
