upgrading apache and mysql

Rather than pay Apple another $500 I'd just like to upgrade my OS X Server 10.2.8 - specifically apache and mysql. Seems like Aaron Faby and Marc Liyanage both have packages available. I have heard that Apple's installation is somewhat different than your usual Unix install - so how to go about doing this ?? PHP package from Marc Liyanage upgraded whatever Apple had installed with no problem. Thanks in advance.
