SMTP /Postfix configuration questions & Relay access denied

I'm getting a "relay access denied" message when I send the 'recpt to: example@example.com' command from a telnet session into port 25 our mail server. I'm assuming it only allows relay to addresses within it's local domain or something but I need it to do a public relay. Any ideas?
