rsync errors in remote backup-invalid argument (22) can’t write creation date
For the last several months, I have been happily and successfully mirroring a local XServe and its attached XServe RAID, more than 2TB worth of data, to a remote XServe with attached generic RAID at our colocation facility using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.01.
Just a few days ago, however, without warning, CCC began reporting rsync errors for every single file copied. The errors are:
rsync: error setting creation date on "/Volumes/Nikki/IT_Admin/
en.lproj/.": Invalid argument (22) (10000)
It is hard to see why rsync would have trouble writing creation dates, or anything else, since it is run as root. In any case, I have checked permissions and ownership on the destination volume and can't see any obvious problems. Mike Bombich and company at CCC don't recognize the error and have nothing to offer, as it is an obscure rsync problem. Searches for this error at rsync.smb.org and generally have turned up nothing pertinent.
By way of background, the source XServe is running OS X Server 10.4.11 and the destination XServe is running 10.5.1. I don't think the OS mismatch is the issue since rsync (CCC) ran fine for weeks after the destination was upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5, but I could be wrong. CCC is set to backup remotely copying selected files, with deletion and no archiving.
Any suggestions are welcome. Rsync is the right tool for this job and in any case Retrospect and other tools I have tried have not been reliable in this environment.
