Question Web setup

I've been looking for an explaination about something and i can't find it anywhere on apple's site or their pdfs. Can anyone tell me what the Aliases section (double-click on a website in Server Admin---it's the last tab) is and what it does. I think i have an idea, but i'm really not sure. Thanks in advance!
