Problem with SMB mounted home dirs in 10.3.9

Our 10.3.9 systems are configured to use the AD plugin for authentication and and to locate and mount the user's home dir via SMB.

Seemingly randomly, users get the following message when they log in:

"The "Home" folder for user "" cannot be found in the usual place.

The "Home" or "Users" folder may have been moved or deleted. If "Home" is located on the the network, the server may be temporarily unavailable. If you continue to have problems, see your system administrator."

When this happens, the login takes an inordinately long amount of time to complete. The user is given a default profile, and their home dir is not available thru the normal homedir icon. However, if you open a terminal and do a df, you see that the user's home dir IS mounted, and you can access it. Logging out and logging in again never helps. Often times it takes several reboots before a user is able to login normally (meaning they don't get the above message).

Does anyone have any idea as to what is causing this? Solution?
