OSX Does not mount SMB Shares on Xserve but Windows Clients Do

I have tried to get our new Tiger 10.4.2 server to share SMB home directories to our Mac 10.3.8 and 10.4.2 clients with no luck. I set the AD plugin on the Macs to force a local home directory so I am able to login, when it logs in I see a question mark where the home folder should be on the dock.

However, if i go to connect to server "smb://ed-xserve" it will show me a list of shares on the Xserve, including the user's home directory that I can mount and have full access to without supplying a password. If I use the same Mac to login to an account with a home directory on a Windows 2000 server it will mount in the dock like it is supposed to.

If I use a PC to login to an account with the home directory on the xserve it will mount in My computer and give me full access to it. The home directories are set in Windows 2003 Active Directory Users and Computers. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? It has been driving me crazy
