Nubie VPN Question

Ok Sooooo I was able to get VPN up and running from my house to the office LAN. But, while I'm connected via VPN, I can't surf, or send and receive e-mail. I have no idea if this is "normal" behavior or not. While I'm connected to the office LAN via VPN, should I be able to continue to surf the net?
