Network Home Folders without OSX Server?

I've got a Mac Lab in a Windows school. We've got the OSX machines set up to login by authenticating to the AD Server then mount the user's Network Home Folder on the Desktop. Can we actually have them use that as their Home Folder (instead of the local one) without using OSX Server?
