Nagios / OS X

I have installed and compiled Nagios to run on and OS X client machine. The program appears to run fine, but I never get any notifications of down servers. I think that I haven't set it up to mail me the notifications. I have set up all of the config files like the two articles and external link provided on AFP548.com. But, since I'm still really new to this UNIX stuff, I realize that I must be missing something. I think that the program has no way to actually send the emails. Any help is appreciated.
