Mounting a share off of the OS X server dismounts the homedir

I recently upgraded from a G4 XServe to a G5 XServe. The XServe has an XServe RAID attached which has two RAID5 sets. One set contains the home directories and the other set has several file shares. The XServe is also the OD master. It is running server 10.4.2.

After the upgrade to the G5 I started noticing a problem on some of the client Macs. All of the client Macs have their homedirs on the XServe (they are shared over AFP). When one of the clients mounts one of the other shares their home directory is immediately disconnected. The user, naturally, sees of their items on the Desktop vanish and they have no access to their files.

At first I thought this was a server issue but after re-installing the server software, recreating the directory (several times) BORING!!!, I still had the same problem.

I then tried reinstalling the client OS. This resolved the issue but I really don't want to reinstall the OS and all software on 30+ Macs.

The users mount the other shares over AFP using "Connect to server" in the Finder.

This appears to happen when the user logs into the server with their name/password. If they are able to mount the shares as a guest things are OK.

I am totally baffled.

I have tried sharing the homedirs via NFS and can't get that to work. I must be missing something in the setup.

I am wondering if this has been seen by anyone or if anyone has any ideas.

PS: The console log on the client states that the home dir can't be mounted because of an error 22. This keeps repeating in the log as the AFP client tries to auto-reconnect.
