How to get a symbolic link on local home to sync with networked home?

I am running OS X server 10.6.4 and have a user who is set up with a portable home directory. Within the user's home directory on their laptop is a symbolic link to a directory on an external drive mounted via a firewire connection. All works fine with the exception that the symbolic link does not sync with the user's network home along with the rest of the user's local home directory. Is there any way to get the linked directory to sync with the user's networked account when the rest of the portable home syncs? Thanks
