Group ownership on new folders

It seems that the default behavior in OSX is to inherit the group ownership from the parent folder when creating a new file/folder. Is there a way to change this to behave like other unix flavors? Meaning: make the newly created file/folder's group owner be the creator's primary gid? Thanks for any assistance.
