Function Keys not working

After imaging an mac book pro (unibody) i am unable to use the volume up and down keys or the Brighness contrast keys on the keyboard. The volume doesn't work at all. I used a Mac os 10.5 retail DVD and put the 10.5.6 combo update in the Base updates. Anyone have any thoughts on how to fix this? Thanks Brian
