FTP permissions inconsistency

My company X-Serve (10.2.8) has FTP running but there appears to be a curious permission discrepancy. If I use 'connect to server' from any 10.3.X client and login using my admin L/P - file permissions for the mounted upload folder according to Finder info are, inexplicably, 'You can only read' - and sure enough that's all I can do. However, I can login even simultaneously with same L/P using Fetch FTP client from the same Mac and my upload folder file permissions are full read/write and it's no problem for me to do that. What's going on here? Is this a bug in the client or server OS or am I missing something FTP101 here?
