Does anybody know how to use Aliases to work?????

I can't find any documentation to explain how to get web aliases to work properly in Server Admin. Is there any way to figure out what the proper format for these settings is other than trial and error. What does pattern and path mean? A example or something would be great,. Apple did not think it necessary to explain any of this so I hope I can get hepl from you guys. Thanks.
