Ok I read your Best Practices DNS article. And I read the DNS chapter in the Peachpit Press book on OS X Server.
After all of that I am still unsure how I should go about what I need to do.
I have a modest G4 server 1.46MHz with 1GB of ram that I am hopping to transfer a number of websites to. I want the server to be able to receive email for more than one domain as well as serve at least 4 different sites to 4 different domain names. The server is running OS X.3.8 server. And I am attempting to use the GUI tools. However, I am willing and capable to use the command line if the syntax is explained and I'm told where to find stuff.
I already have the server up and running on its own IP. The stuff I have read on setting up DNS always seems geared to people with multiple servers doing email and DNS and web serving all on separate machines. I am doing it all on one machine so the isntructions have left me completely confused.
I would really appreciate it if someone would be willing to try and answer my questions specifically. Anything to help me understand how this works.
I have DNS services running on the server. I even have a domain name assigned to the server specifically to use for the DNS that points to the server IP address:
dns1.theserverdomain.com
Now for my questions.
I go to DNS and add a Zone record. It asks for a Zone Name, Type, SOA, and Admin Email.
I entered in:
thefirstdomain.com.
For the Zone Name. For Type I chose, Master. For SOA I have no idea what to enter? Should this be the DNS domain I created? :
dns1.theserverdomain.com.
For Admin Email can that be any email?
Ok after entering in that information which records need to be within that Zone in order for me to have the server both accept email and serve webpages from that domain?
After that I think I understand fairly well how I get Web services set for each domain.
Again I really appreciate anyone willing to help. I'm very new to doing this sort of thing but I'm a quick study when I have someone able to answer my specific questions. I can't afford the apple support for OS X server sadly.
