Disk or SATA adapter errors

My system is hanging and I'm pretty sure it is due to a bad disk, a bad disk block, or a clogged SATA adapter. Which error logs would contain information about these items -- hardware errors, disk errors, adapter errors, etc? Thank you, Perry
