Delete Mail

I successfully set up mail to send and receive email messages and connected to the server using apple's Mail program. I can creat messages, and receive messages through this program. However when I delete a message it does not delete on the server. I have made sure that I "Erases Deleated Messages.." in mail. Any idea why this happens?
