If you decide to send your IMAP password to a 10.3 (or 10.3.1) server, the server will munge the username, causing authentication to periodically fail. “ron” becomes “ronon”, “nick” becomes “nickn” and “aaron” becomes “aarons” on my server. Apple tech.admin has acknowledged the problem to us.
I’ve seen this using both OS X Mail and Entourage clients.
Our workaround is to use a non-encrypted password, within an SSL tunnel.
