Connect to an Xserve AFP Share As Root?

Title says it all - can this be done? If I use AFP to connect to our Xserve, the shared volume is mounted as my administrative user. Because of this, even if I am root on my G4, there are files on the Xserve that I can't access (they belong to other users or root on the Xserve). Of course, I can mount as root using NFS, but then we get into the resource fork loss arena and that's a whole new set of headaches. Anybody figured this one out? Or, is it a lost cause?
