can’t unmount disk

I have three disks on a G5 (two internal, one external). They are named:

disk0
disk1
disk2

The OS is on disk0 and its mount point is /
disk1 and disk2 have the mount points /Volumes/disk1 and /Volumes/disk2 respectively.

However, Disk Utility will not run verify on disk1. It gives the error, "could not unmound disk". 'umount' gives the message "resource busey". Results of the mount command are as follows:

truffula:~ admin$ mount
/dev/disk1s9 on / (local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (local)
fdesc on /dev (union)
on /.vol
automount -nsl [180] on /Network (automounted)
automount -fstab [229] on /automount/Servers (automounted)
automount -static [229] on /automount/static (automounted)
/dev/disk0s9 on /Volumes/disk1 (local)
/dev/disk2s6 on /Volumes/disk2 (local)

Any ideas... Anyone? Thanks in advance
