Can’t mount group shares

Hi, I'm having problems trying to get a group share to automatically mount for clients. (Server = 10.3.2, clients = 10.3.2). The group has a group folder (located on the server itself; on a second disk; so the path is /Volumes/GroupShares/thegroupshare). I'm trying to mount it as AFP. What I don't fully understand is what the 'Create mount record' checkbox means, and exactly what goes into the 'Custom mount path' (which is what I'm using - [right?]). I think the 'custom mount path' is what gets created on the client's machine; not what already exists on the server? Is there a standard path for this, like somewhere in /Network or /automount? I've tried combinations of settings but without success. The share does not appear in the client's Finder window as a mounted volume (yes, all preferences are on to show network volumes). Looking at the system.log on the client machine, I can see that it tries to create a symlink for the mount, but fails with error 5. Perhaps this is the root cause of the problem? Error 5 is 'I/O error' !?!? All the docs I can find on Apple's website are for Jaguar and don't seem to have been updated for Panther. Are there any that describe this in detail? Please let me know if you need more info. Thanks very much. Steve. PS. What I think I need is a 'Group shares for Dummies' book
