Cannot pull reverse zones – unexpected rcode

I cannot seem to pull secondary domains from my master DNS. I am getting "Unexpected rcode (NXDOMAIN) from master ... Does someone know what this error means and how to fix it? I can manually copy the zones and put them in place and they work. But automatically pulling them does not. Pulling forward zones work fine. TIA.
