ARD dead after update to 10.4.10

Hello all, I recently updated one of my Intel XServes to 10.4.10. When it rebooted, I could get to the login screen via Remote Desktop. However as soon as it showed the desktop, the screen was all mangled - like looking at an old television that is not tuned in correctly. Has anyone experienced this and know of a fix? thanks in advance
