Profile Manager 2

With the release of OS X 10.8 Server came an updated version of Profile Manager.  If you did not dive into Profile Manager on 10.7 Server, then now is the time to get going with some form of MDM.  Having a MDM solution will be necessary going forward.  Whether this solution involves Casper Suite, AirWatch, Apple’s own Profile Manager or a homegrown effort, the ability to manage devices via Configuration Profiles will be important.

Charles Edge has a great tutorial on how to setup Profile Manager 2 from scratch on a fresh 10.8 Server install.  He covers everything involved with a fresh install, including Open Directory setup, Apple Push Notifications and how to enroll machines from the Profile Manager website.  If you want to use a MDM solution but don’t necessarily want to buy a third party product to do so, you cannot go wrong with Profile Manager 2.
