Michael Bartosh 1977-2006

AFP548 Site NewsUpdate: For those of you wishing to do something to remember Michael, we're currently working on setting up a scholarship to MacWorld in his name. Michael's wife thinks that this would be a better place to spend your efforts than sending flowers would be. More information on this as it becomes available.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that I write these words, but this weekend we lost Michael Bartosh to a tragic accident in Tokyo, Japan at the far too young age of 28.

Early on Sunday morning Michael fell to his death from a friend's balcony. Police have ruled the death an accident.

To many people Michael was a source of endless information that he provided about Mac OS X Server. He was an author, a trainer, a consultant, and, to many, a good friend. All of us here at AFP548.com are still in a state of shock over the loss. We are sure that many in the community feel the same way.

He is survived by his wife, Amber. Please keep his family in your thoughts during these difficult times. We know he will never be far from ours.

I also would like to send my thoughts to his family.
Though I never met him, he helped me out of a number of binds, though he
never knew it.
Anyone who is as willing to give as much of his own time to help others is a
great treasure and will be greatly missed.

Sad to hear the news about Michael, and so young too. I have never met him,
but saw him as someone who was always keen to help others on the list by
having either direct solutions or pointing them in the right direction. He will be
missed, and condolences go out to his family. I hope his spirit of helpfulness will
continue to live on through others...

I had the pleasure to met him at WWDC and to excchange directly mail
information about his book a few monthes ago.

Mickael was not for me what I could call a friend, but he gave me and certainly
all of us from the MacOS X Server comunity, so much knowlledge along his
book, website and posts on the macosxserver mailing list, to say that we lost
friend.

So long Mickael, you'll miss me.

Unfortunately I never had the chance to meet Michael, but his research and work
have been indespensible aids to us.

It is a terrible tragedy and he will be sorely missed by the Mac server community.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Goodbye Michael and thanks for all your help

Aw crap is right! I always thought of Mike as a member of the Energizer Bunny genus. Only met the guy once IRL, but he certainly has a list of friends that will miss him, and our community is lessened by his absence.

immense loss, on so many levels.

Wow. Absolutely shocking news! My heart goes out to his family and friends.
Like most people I was impressed by generosity of knowledgde on the mail
lists and his kindness to help all of us confused little monkeys. I will always
remmeber the fun night at MacWorld when we all got together with the
afp548 kids. He was surrounded by a great bunch of his friends, there was
lotsa love in small bar. He will be missed.

This is really a great loss. I did my AD-OD implementation with the help of the
documentation and information Michael did provide so freely and would still
be at the very beginning without this ( as the docs by Apple simply don't get
you anywhere ). So I need to thank him for maling me achieve my goals and
dreams to implement an Xserve in an otherwise Windows centric world.
Without him I would have given up soon and I guess so would have a lot of
others as well. I am much older thank Michael, but I learned a lot from him,
though I never got to know him personally.

My thoughts are with his family..

Greetings

I first met Michael in 2003 at an Apple conference in CA. Michael delivered one
of the most amazing technology presentations that I have ever seen. In my
opinion his knowledge was absolutely unparalleled. In addition to his technical
talents his ability and willingness to share his gifts were second to none. He will
be missed by thousands throughout the world. Our thoughts are now with his
wife and family.

Way too soon Mike!

You certainly lived life to its fullest during your short time here... enjoyed all the times we shared at A&M, Austin, Dallas and Colorado.

Gosh, you'll be missed by many, many OSX and Apple people...

I've met Michael several times, and corresponded with him via email. I've attended many of his classes and presentations at past WWDC's and was looking forward to attending more this year.

My heart and prayers go out to his wife. What a tragedy. This is a great loss to the Mac community, but that pales in comparison to the loss being felt by his friends and family.

Rest in Peace Michael.

When I first met Michael, I thought he was Josh (Macshome of this site) he looked so young. Although I'd only got to tip back a beer with Michael a few times, I had absolutely no idea that I'd never have another chance when I left MWSF 2006. Michael was a character. He liked to eat gross chili. He treated his Powerbook as though it were a shield against rocks and spears (if you saw it, you'd know what I meant - it was amazing that it still worked!). He'd answer just about any question you'd ask, no matter how obvious the answer was, and always said just about the right thing at the right time, if was on a listserve or forum.

Michael's book "Essential Panther Server Administration" is a book that's unique in all of the Mac IT world, because it shows a mastery of Mac OS X Server infused with enthusiasm at every turn. That book is Michael's brain at its very, very best.

Many people come up to me as ask "How long have you been a UNIX guy?" I think it would surprise many people that I started with Mac OS X at the same time practically everyone else did: 2001, with virtually NO UNIX experience at all (well maybe a little Linux experience). But every time someone says "Man you sure known a lot," I think of Michael Bartosh, who helped me (and so many) people through the initial struggles with Mac OS X and who helped deveop the original Apple certification curriculumn, as well as the ACSA exams. Michael was an exceptionally generous fellow. Now, who'll drink the serveral cases of beer I owe him for all the help he gave me?

What a sad and tragic loss for the community and his family! I am so genuinely sorry to hear this...

I met MB at MWSF 2006 for the first (and only) time. Already a legend in the community, I was prepared to be underwhelmed by his presentation (after all, not many people are as large as their legend). In fact, afterwards, I could not have been more impressed. He was a treasure trove of knowledge for his mere 28 years (wheww!, did I say 28). Always a little on the gruff (and grumpy) side (aren't we all), I absolutely enjoyed his ability to hop from one topic to another so seamlessly. Without sounding sycophantic, he WAS the Ultimate Master. When it came to OS X (Server), he served as the Encyclopedia Britannia of the Mac community. Extremely technical, a master of detail, incredibly sharp, he gave our community hard-won legitimacy. Who could not have been impressed with his talents? He will be greatly missed by ALL...

Let's honor his memory by emulating his professionalism, dedication and spirit.

Very sad news :/

I've had the privilege of knowing Bartosh for the last four years or so; our paths crossed many times on the Apple training circuit. He invited me to help with his panther server book, and I was and still am proud to be associated with his work.
28 is way too young... He worked and played very hard. He will be missed.

RIP, buddy.

Wow, I had no idea that Bartosh was only 28. Based on the depth of his
knowledge and the fact that seemed to always have the correct answers, I
always pictured him as a 40-something engineer type, full of grizzled wisdom.
Who knows what he might have accomplished if it weren't for this tragic
accident. It's a damnable shame.

Wow. What a loss for the community, for his family and friends. I knew him
when he was the Higher Education SE working with Apple in Colorado. I
remember recruiting events for CSU's and CU's user groups, and of
MacWorlds, WWDC 2001, MW parties, and beers on the Hill in Boulder. I
remember calling him not 3 months ago asking him a question regarding AD/
OD and despite his hectic schedule, he took the time to help me out. I
promised him a drink when I see him at WWDC this year. I'm sad you had to
go soon, buddy. I'll miss ya.

Hey Mike,
You died how you lived buddy, free as a bird. Just to let you know, their are more then a few shots being downed tonight in your memory. Those of us who knew you will be angry, and sad at the same time at your passing.
I remember that big room we all hung out at Paul Kent's Mac convention deal in Santa Barbara. Watching the Family Guy, and you as always, the life of the party. I remember you were up untill like 5 am or something and then went and taught a class on AD integration at 9am. Crazy. No one else could have done it, but you could.
I had dinner with Joel a few months ago. We talked about you. I was looking forward to seeing you at MacWorld or WWDC.
I am sure you are all ready talking to St. Peter about a directory service to drastically simplify his job. Then taking him out for a beer. Who is going to make all those higher ed SE's look good now?

Heres to the good times!

Cheers,
Tom

I only met Michael Bartosh once, when he came to London to give an
Apple Technical Briefing on Directory Integration in March this year.

He was very gifted speaker, and had the rare ability to communicate
complex information to an audience with a wide range of previous
experience in the subject.

I was most impressed by his gentle and professional manner, and the way
in which he made time to talk directly to individual delegates and address
issues which seemed important to them.

I would echo the expressions of sympathy to his wife and family, and the
suggestion that his memory will be well served by holding up his
professionalism as an example for others to follow.

Michael disseminated knowlege with a rapid fire patter, in a quiet, often
melodic voice that made every person in his audience feel at ease. Despite his
strong opinions, he gave everyone room to agree or dispute. Michael was free
with his knowledge and shared that knowledge with everyone who needed his
help.

Most of us know that moment of "aha!" when an idea clicks into place; when
we finally "get it". Michael was responsible for giving many of us such
moments. He was a gifted teacher.

His brilliance was unquestionable and far sadder...his friendship, loyalty and
humor will be sorely missed.

We'll all miss you, Michael.

I "met" Michael via email in early 1999 -- both of us were among the first
hires for Apple's then-new Campus Rep program. Those who've seen him in
action on the Apple Training circuit, on AFP548, mailing lists, etc. can
probably guess that he was just as great a "Mac Genius" back then... and
you'd be right. I didn't see so much of this personally -- he was doing his
kickass job with customers at Texas A&M, I was at UIUC, so most of our
interactions were in a different context.

For the two years (or so) he and I were Campus Reps, Michael was
practically the center of our far-flung organization. From the very beginning,
he went above and beyond... from first helping keep the initial hundred or
so of us in contact so we could share ideas, to eventually helping whip Apple
into shape to turn the Campus Rep program from sort of an afterthought
into a strong sales-and-technical presence at universities around the
country.

Some time later, I had moved on to a position at The Omni Group and our
paths crossed again; we almost hired Michael as our first Support Manager.
The company was (and probably still is) too strapped for cash to provide
relocation, so we ended up hiring someone locally. I was disappointed at the
time, but in retrospect I'm glad it worked out that way... Mike certainly
went on to bigger and better things in life. (Brian turned out to be a great
guy for Omni, too.)

He was just plain a great guy to be around, too... but I don't think I could
write anything about his infectious enthusiasm that'd do it justice. We'll
miss you, Michael.

We all deal with loss differently. Here is my hack attempt to say so-long to a big-
hearted, brash, bright, bold, brain that always shared his knowledge...

With emotions flowing, questioning why... I wrote this in one hour on the day I
heard the news. He would have told me I compressed it wrong :-P

He was many things to many people... This is how I knew him - This is what

Michael was a great guy who had great accomplishments. I am a relative of his and although did not get to see him often, I always heard of all his accomplishments from his Mother Diana, who is also a wonderful person. After reading all of the comments and Michael's willingness to help others I was proud to see that Diana passed this on to Michael. Diana also played a large part in his successs as she is a teacher and made sure Michael was studying and learning the things he should to succeed in this world. This would probably sound a little bit odd. I am a 29 YO doctor from Egypt. I kind of care about IT and I read about what happened to Michael on an RSS feed. I have never heard about him before but I was deeply touched by what happened to him. I did my research about him, I saw his photograph and I read all the comments posted here and I would like to say that even for people who sound a thousand miles away like me I am going to miss such a beautiful mind and all of man kind will be affected with such a loss. Obviously, to his family and friends there was more to him than just being a 'Network Guru', or whatever. But i feel that his help was such that i, on behalf of our university, owe alot of thanks and, being a mac tech for quite a few years, recognize that the community has suffered a great loss.

I didn't know him personally but he helped me out on numerous occasions and, in turn, changed and improved the way our computer labs are used. Things are a lot smoother around here these days.

I always thought 'what a top guy' after his responses because he was always so willingly helpful and i had absolute faith that he knew what he was talking about.

I don't spend so much time reading about IT stuff these days but at that time i really felt like i was riding the crest of a wave with this OD / AD intergration stuff. For me, without Michael Bartosh, it would never have been possible at our university. It was a proud moment for me to get it all up and running.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and friends.

Having already realized that his book was THE book on Xserve, and his postings on the Internet were so very helpful, I looked forward to attending his class in Macworld 06. Surely he must be an elderly, wise man. Previous to his class, as I was attending another class on Xserve, right in the middle of the class a young guy in blue jeans and a t-shirt (the kind you wear under!! your shirt), walked in and sat on the stage behind the guys giving the class. He seemed so happy to be there, and even said a few things. Later, at Bartosh's class, can you imagine the shock when I saw that the older, wise man was actually this young guy. How could this be? But as he opened his mouth, I was just amazed at what was in someone who seemingly was way to young to have that kind of content. My apologies to the other wonderful teachers at Macworld, but Michael was also the rare teacher that you felt just charmed his audience. I left very impressed and looked so forward to more classes under him in the future, more books, and more postings on the net. When I saw the news, I just wept. My heart goes out to his wife and family, and my prayers are certainly with them.

I had the pleasure of meeting Michael on a few occasions and I was shocked to find out that he is no longer with us any more.

I'm lost for words and do not know what to say to his friends and family but what I do remember about him is that knowledge flowed from him like water into an empty glass.

In a short space of time I learned quite a lot just by listening to what he had to say and easily understanding the information presented.

He is a gifted person to have achieved so much in such little time and will be missed.
